Short story
Chiropractic is a natural, gentle, healing art that recognises the body's own natural healing abilities. Chiropractic literally means "done by hand" or "manipulation". It is therefore a form of normalisation of the skeletal structure, particularly the spine. It is not a branch of medicine but a separate health system that does not use drugs or surgery.
Chiropractors are specially trained to evaluate the musculoskeletal and nervous systems and determine what role problems with these systems play in overall health.
Many types of joint pain are caused or aggravated by abnormal movement or restriction of the joints (subluxations). Chiropractors correct or improve these mechanical abnormalities of the joints, muscles and nerves.
The treatment consists of specific manual techniques (adjustments), and supportive measures such as massage and stretching, and advice on posture and exercises, to improve and restore normal movement.
In the world today, chiropractic is recognised as the largest and most well trained profession for the conservative, non-invasive care of neuromusculoskeletal problems and overall wellness.
Chiropractic works on the principle that disturbances of the nervous system may affect health. These disturbances may be caused by derangements within the musculoskeletal system. By maintaining optimum structure and function of the nervous system chiropractors help the body attain optimum health.
